Arriving from Women's National Basketball League club Melbourne Boomers, May did not fulfill club performance expectations on or off the floor.
May is the second player cut from Ballarat Basketball's elite programs in the South East Australian Basketball League mid-season break.
She follows American import Kodi Augustus in leaving the MARS Minerdome this week.
Ballarat Basketball chief executive officer Peter Eddy said the chemistry of the team had not been working in a struggling season. It had reached a point when a tough change had to be made.
"The team felt Jess had dropped back a level effort-wise and that was a frustrating challenge for them," Eddy said.
"This season is challenging enough for the players confidence-wise.
"We had to make changes to reinvigorate the team...unfortunately, we felt the player that had to be cut was Jess."
The club's final decision on May was made late Friday night. Unlike the Miners, Rush does not plan to seek a replacement.
Eddy said the Rush program had a wealth of guards and removing May opened greater chance to test emerging Ballarat players like Bronte Clark and Ryleigh Haire.
He said the move would help promote greater balance and build for the future in a similar way Kasey Burton and Molly Mathews had stepped up their SEABL games this season.
Clark has been building confidence in her game via Rush's youth league team alongside youngster Haire.
Rush confirmed May's longtime teammate Shanae Greaves will play on at the Minerdome.
Greaves and May signed with Rush together in the off-season, transferring from their home club Knox, which is in recess this SEABL season. The pair also played for the Boomers together.
Fellow Boomers-listed player Liv Thompson will also continue playing with Rush.
Rush has chalked up one win to the mid-season break and is out of the chase for a finals spot in SEABL's east conference.
Players and coaches are on leave and will return to training after the long weekend to prepare for a road-trip to Bendigo next Saturday night.
