PARALYMPICS: Wheelchair rugby gold medal for Buninyong's Smith 

GREG Smith is a paralympic gold medallist for a fourth time.

Smith, 35, from Buninyong added to his career gold medal count with the Australian wheelchair rugby team in London overnight.

Smith was not the only Ballarat flavour in the team.Brad Dubberley, who grew up in Ballarat, is head coach.

Australian defeated Canada 66-51 - going through the tournament unbeaten.

Australia had the better of Canada 64-52, Sweden 60-47 and Belgium 58-43 in the pool games, and Japan 59-45 in a semi-final.

Ryley Batt was again the star performer for Australia.

The 23-year-old, appearing in his third Paralympics, scored 37 goals to give him a remarkable tally of 160 from his five tournament starts. 

A quadriplegic since a car accident as a 19-year-old, Smith began his paralympics experience at Barcelona in 1992.

London is his fifth Games, having also competed in Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000 and Beijing in 2008.

He previous gold medals came on the athletics track in Sydney in the 800, 1500 and 5000 metres.Smith returned from athletics in 2002.

After a two-year break from elite sport he took up wheelchair rugby and found himself selected for Beijing.

He again retired, only making another comeback - this time culminating with a gold medal.

Smith was a three-time medallist - one silver and two bronze - in Barcelona and a silver medallist in Atlanta and Beijing.
