But now, with the school's new Mary's Mount Centre, the decision was made to stage the show once again.
“We've opened our new theatre and I really wanted to choose a big, colourful, vibrant show to celebrate its opening,” production director Marcella Crowley said.
“For the opening night, we have Sister Gerri Carroll coming who played Joseph in the production 40 years ago.”
Telling the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colours, Ms Crowley said Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat had many roles, making it perfect for a school production.
“There are a lot of lead roles in the story which give more students the opportunity to take part,” she said.
“We've been rehearsing for six months and have had the luxury of working in our own theatre which helps make it a really good show.
“Everybody is sure to leave the show humming one of the tunes.”
About 120 students from Loreto College and St Patrick's College will take part in the production which will be staged from Wednesday until Saturday, June 20.
