A nine-goal victory over Lake Wendouree on Sunday extended North City’s unbeaten streak, having won its first eight games of the season.
However, it was not until the victory at Eureka Stadium that she realised just how strong her team was.
A somewhat comfortable draw had allowed North City to avoid the top sides for the first eight rounds, yet to face either the Lakers or ladder leaders East Point.
“We just didn’t really know what top expect because we probably have had an easier draw and we knew Lakers were a good side,” she said.
“I think it showed we are probably a bit more advanced than what I thought in the end.”
A 19-8 second quarter proved the catalyst towards the victory, which the home side eventually won 53-44.
Apart from that term, however, the Lakers were well and truly in the contest.
In fact, they led at quarter time and also won the third quarter.
“We really turned it up in that second quarter and once we had the lead, we could protect it a bit as Lakers became the team that had to make the changes,” McCartin said.
“They are right up there though, they showed how good a team they can be.”
In other BFNL A-grade games at the weekend, Sunbury ended Ballarat’s winning streak with a 10-goal victory at home.
The Lions won all four quarters in the tight tussle to eventually run out 45-35 victors.
They remain in fifth spot on the ladder, while the Swans hold onto their sixth spot by percentage.
Redan continued its strong start to the season with an 11-goal win over reigning premiers Melton.
Jedda Heard (24 goals) and Ruby Parry (18 goals) shared the scoring for the maroon and gold, with Emma Henry named best on court in wing defence.
Elsewhere, Sebastopol keeps knocking on the top six with a 12-goal win over Darley and East Point remains undefeated after smashing Melton South by 43 goals.
