Melbourne trains delayed by 'tree on the tracks'

V/LINE passengers have taken to social media to report that a passenger train struck a tree on the Ballarat line near Gordon this morning.

It's believed a tree across the tracks delayed the 5.31am Wendouree to Southern Cross service and subsequent trains have been cancelled to coach services.

The Courier reporter Evan Schuurman, on a later Ballarat-bound train, said an announcement was made alerting passengers that a "train had struck a tree".

He said a later announcement clarified there was a "tree over the tracks".

The Ballarat line is currently listed as "suspended" on the V/Line website.

Ballan police sergeant Ken Tingate said he had heard about a train "coming across" a tree over the tracks, but did not receive a call-out over the incident.

"I know nothing - except that there are buses at the station," he said.

"It could be something V/Line is looking into internally."

V/Line was this morning contacted for comment.
