Situated in the Bridge Mall in an 1870s heritage building, the art space is set to be funded by the people for the people.
Entitled Vox Populi, the gallery will allow local artists to crowdsource funds in order to rent their space.
Vox Populi director Mark McNamara said he wanted to create a place where art was accessible to all. He said this was the first art space he knew of which would be launched using crowdfunding.
“We want artists to get a show up even if they don’t have the funds themselves,” McNamara said.
McNamara said artists who wanted to exhibit their work would create an artist profile on Vox Populi’s Pozible crowdfunding page and specify a target amount.
Followers would then contribute towards their preferred artists’ campaigns.
“The crowdfunding will cover the cost of the space for the artist and the cost of having the show,” McNamara said.
Vox Populi will open as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale before exhibiting the work of other artists.
The gallery’s curator Dan Kelly said he was excited about showcasing a range of eclectic works.
