For some their dream will never become a reality, but for Ballarat's Phillip Leitch it has become his dream job.
Mr Leitch is Kryal Castle's arena manager and when he isn't managing the arena, he is in it. The medieval theme park's jousting position also belongs to the 41-year-old.
But it wasn't as simple as picking up a lance and jumping on a horse, Mr Leitch has spent much of life preparing for the job. “I always had a love of the middle ages and any form of martial arts. These led me to doing full contact armoured fighting on foot,” he said.
“My wife had horses and I had some riding ability so I decided that the natural progression was jousting.”
As part of the Winterlude Festival, Kryal Castle will host a fire festival where Mr Leitch and the park's fellow jousters will joust with flaming lances and fight with flaming swords. Knights Of Fire At Kryal Castle will take place between June 27 and July 12.
My earliest memory is... playing with a praying mantis under my house in New Guinea when I was about two.
When I was a child I wanted to be... a knight or a ninja.
My parents always said... go play outside.
My greatest moment in my life was... seeing my baby girl for the first time.
In four words, I am... having a great time.
I wish I'd never worn... a headband in the 1980s.
Cat or dog? Horse.
I often wonder... where my keys are.
The first thing I reach for on a Sunday morning is... my phone, to turn off my alarm.
The hardest thing I've done in my life is… passing special forces training in the Australian Army.
My ideal day would be spent… with my family.
If I could change one thing in the world it would be… the temperature in Ballarat.
After life there is… legacy.
I love... Lisa Leitch forever.
My pet dislike is... abusive parents; there can be no greater betrayal of trust.
I can't live without... having a good laugh.
Before I die I would love to... ride a horse from the top to the bottom of Tasmania, through the Highland Lakes.
If I could invite any five people to dinner they would be… Prince Harry, Stephen Fry, Stan Lee, Jackie Chan and Kirk Hammett.
If I could be anyone else for a day I would be… Doctor Who.
I'm passionate about... my work and my hobby. Lucky they are the same thing.
A book/movie/song that inspires me... Dune by Frank Herbert.
