A JOINT burn-off between the CFA, DSE and the East Victorian Forest Plantation Company was carried out in Canadian Forest this afternoon.
Huge plumes of smoke were visible from Ballarat for much of the afternoon as more than a dozen firefighters burnt 45 hectares inside a former blue gum plantation.
CFA units from Ballarat, Sebastopol and Buninyong attended the fire, along with local DSE units.
The land is owned by the EVFPC and their private fire fighting appliances also assisted with the controlled burn.
CFA Grampians Region Vegetation Reduction officer Tony Brady said the burn provided a timely reminder for Ballarat residents to prepare their properties for the coming fire season.
