Both teams had plenty to prove. Melton was out to regain pride after an obliteration at the hands of the raging Redan last week. Bacchus Marsh, ranked fifth entering the round, is preparing for telling matches against Redan, North Ballarat City and Darley that loom ahead.
There was little splitting the Cobras from the Bloods but the Cobras had to quickly regroup from a 19-point deficit at the final break. Cobras’ playing-coach Cam Richardson was best on ground.
Meanwhile, Redan kept sharpening its claws, this time in a 199-point win against Sebastopol. The Lions sported 16 goalkickers in the rampage.
Sebastopol still put up a good fight, despite the scoreboard, which caught Redan by surprise in patches and forced the Lions to readjust their pressure.
The Lions were simply more experienced and more powerful against the developing Burras.
North Ballarat City made light work of East Point at Eureka Stadium.
City claimed a 69-point win against the top-six contender, having built a five-goal lead by half-time. City’s Brendan Howard booted four goals in the win while Keenan George was City’s best on ground.
Ballarat has chalked up its second season win. The Swans snared a 37-point win against Melton South in the Panthers’ lair.
The Panthers made a late comeback from 58 points down at half-time.
Panther Jordan Sinclair kicked five goals while Swans Nicholas O’Farrell and Sam James kicked three goals apiece.
Darley will host Lake Wendouree in match of the round at Darley Park on Sunday.
