The $7.5 million state-of-the-art facility in Wendouree, officially opened yesterday, includes 30 new beds.
Japara Healthcare executive director of operations Jerome Jordan said 50 per cent of the new accommodation had already been occupied. This would normally take six months.
Kelaston Aged Care facility manager Kristine Gerdtz said there was a huge demand for aged care accommodation in Ballarat and the extra beds would help ease this.
“Kelaston has always had large waiting lists,” Ms Gerdtz said.
“There is huge demand for aged care accommodation, not just at Kelaston, but overall.”
Ms Gerdtz said she was proud to see the project finished after three years in the making.
The development includes a significant refurbishment of the existing facility, providing high quality single room accommodation for Ballarat’s ageing population.
With its new modern look, Kelaston has bucked the trend of the traditional aged care accommodation, Ms Gerdtz said.
Japara Healthcare own and operate 39 aged care facilities across Australia, including Kelaston Aged Care.
