Three companies – Nicholson Construction, New Select Homes and Greg Smith Homes – have cleaned up at this year’s Master Builders Association 2015 Regional Building Awards.
Nicholson Construction won the overall prize for the second consecutive year in the regional commercial builder of the year award.
Nicholson also took out the coveted award for excellence in construction of commercial buildings over $6 million for its stunning work on Ballarat Community Health’s (BCH) new Lucas centre.
Ballarat was also successful in two other categories, with Greg Smith Homes taking out the best renovation/addition between $200,000-$300,000 for its work on a house in Ross Creek, while New Select Homes took honours in the best display home between $200,000-$300,000 courtesy of its construction of a house in Lucas.
Nicholson Construction director Richard Nicholson said the awards were important for Ballarat building companies, given their peer-assessed nature.
“The award is recognition by our peers in the industry, of the hard work, dedication and committment our people put into our projects,” Mr Nicholson said.
Nicholson Construction’s efforts on the BCH Lucas centre saw it gain recognition in two categories, with the building taking an architectural award for design as well as a construction award for the build.
Greg Smith, director of Greg Smith Homes, said the company put a lot of work into the house that won the best renovation award.
“We do a lot of renovations in the Ballarat area,” Mr Smith said.
“We left all the sub floor and the base in position and we pulled a third of it down. We pulled down the car port and then we re-built the walls and roof, re-lined all the stairs, and put a new garage in.
“It was a modern sort of renovation with various materials in with the facade and it sat well on the block with nice views.”
New Select Homes claimed the best best display home between $200,000-$300,000 for the second straight year.
“The house itself has a few very good features through the clients’ requirements that we’ve put in,” director Jamie Severino said.
“One has been a double walk through shower which is really popular.”
