As a regular performer in bands and talent quests, he would often get told he had a voice like Roy Orbison.
“I would do a few Roy songs in my sets and I got told a lot I sounded like him so I kind of fell into doing (Roy Orbison songs) and went from there,” Bourne said.
“Then I ventured out into my own show and 18 years later I’m still doing it.”
Bourne performs as Roy Orbison in the concert extravaganza Roy Orbison and The Everly Brothers, set to come to Ballarat this weekend.
The concert showcases the classic hits of two of the world’s greatest and most successful rock n roll music outfits of all time.
Bourne has been described as having the spirit of Roy Orbison, performing the rock legend’s iconic hits including Pretty Woman, Crying, Dream Baby, Leah, Penny Arcade, Danny Boy and Only the Lonely.
He said he never got bored of performing the songs, even though he had been doing so for close to two decades.
“It’s a funny thing. Every show to me is a different show and a new show,” Bourne said.
“Although I’m singing the same songs, I treat every show as a new show. There are new audiences, new people so it doesn’t get boring for me at all.
“I see it as an incredible privilege and honour to be able to do what I do and to get paid for doing what I love.”
As well as reliving the magic of Roy Orbison’s music, the concert showcases the sounds of The Everly Brothers through internationally-renowned vocal harmony duo The Robertson Brothers.
With their world-class voices and vocal harmonies, The Robertson Brothers will perform hits including Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, All I Have to do Is Dream, Bird Dog and Crying in the Rain.
Bourne said the combination of Roy Orbison’s music and the music of The Everly Brothers made for one of the strongest shows in music history.
“Most of the time when I’m at the concert I watch the (Robertson) boys perform first and there’s not one person not tapping or singing along to the songs,” he said.
“It’s timeless music and this show has the ability to bring back memories for people and that’s the overwhelming feedback we receive. People absolutely love it.”
Having won 23 Industry Awards and been nominated for Golden Guitar awards and Aria awards, Roy Orbison and The Everly Brothers will head to Ballarat as part of its extensive national tour.
“It’s also a show about learning a little bit more about the artists we are paying tribute to by touching on moments in both their careers that people find interesting,” Bourne said.
“We hope it’s going to be one of the best shows (our audiences) have ever seen and we endeavour to give them something they won’t forget.”
