The acts will come together as part of Karunai – a fundraising event organised for Ballarat Rural Australians for Refugees.
The afternoon soiree will feature musicians Archer, Stella Savy Avek Frers, Paige Duggan, Beatboxbo, Rose Turtle Ertler, Isimiadi and Hap Hayward.
Karunai event organiser Kate Moran said she and fellow musician Rose Turtle Ertler decided to organise the event in support of BRAR’s work in the community.
“We became aware of the group’s need for additional funding and because both of us are musicians and human rights advocates, we thought we would work together to deliver the event to raise funds for the organisation,” she said.
“Rose and I have quite a few connections in the music industry so we’ve come up with a pretty solid line-up.
“They’re all good people who will come together and bring their fans and followers for an afternoon filled with people who have the same intention to make a difference.”
Karunai, which translates to kindness and compassion in Tamil, will also feature a funky retro furniture sale. Homemade soup, drinks and cakes will also be available for purchase.
Ms Moran said all proceeds would go towards BRAR.
“These families and individuals are no longer eligible for any funding or financial support, they can’t work and have no education rights so they need assistance for everything from clothing to bills,” she said.
“This is one of the things BRAR does, but offering support and friendship is also vital in assisting these people navigate through the different processes they have to endure.”
Ballarat Rural Australians for Refugees is a group of people who befriend and support asylum seekers and refugees in detention centres and in the community.
Ms Moran said the group’s members listened to the refugees’ needs and where possible, gave moral, practical and financial support to help with their resettlement.
Although not a member of the organisation herself, she said she shared the group’s passion for changing negative attitudes towards refugees and asylum seekers.
“My passion for human rights has always existed and I suspect it’s the same for Rose. The reality is it is part of our community and we have families and individuals living here who are in need of our assistance.
“It’s not that far from home that we can turn a blind eye and rely on someone else to sort it out. It very much needs a community response.
“Karunai will be a lovely opportunity for good people to come together and enjoy an afternoon together while raising money for a great cause and developing awareness and understanding of the issues refugees and asylum seekers face.”
