National Diabetes Week – beginning July 12 – aims to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and the growing number of people who have it.
According to Diabetes Victoria more than 4850 Ballarat people or 86.6 per cent of sufferers are registered with type two diabetes, more than 580 (10.5%) live with type one diabetes and more than 130 (2.4%) women have gestational diabetes.
Ballarat Health Service endocrinologist Dr David Song said Ballarat shows similar trends to other major regional centres.
“If you are overweight, have a family history or have symptoms such as excessive thirst, unexplained fatigue, going to the toilet all the time, you should see a doctor for a screening,” he said.
“To help prevent diabetes everyone in the Ballarat region should be maintaining a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet and exercising regularly.”
