Paul Parker has trained hundreds of actors who have been on film, television and theatre in the USA.
Those actors have been on shows including True Blood, Law & Order – LA, Lost, Young and the Restless, CSI Miami, ER, Two and a Half Men and Big Love.
The Australian actors he has coached have appeared on The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Rake and many commercials.
Mr Parker said he initially started a career in acting but his mother told him in 1990, “You are a really good actor but would make a better teacher”.
After becoming a qualified acting teacher, Mr Parker moved to Hollywood, known as the home of the entertainment industry, where his career kicked off.
He founded and ran the Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts for more than nine years across Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.
Mr Parker said he found his niche and enjoyed his ability to teach people how to preform in front of a camera and live audience.
“I am very proud I became a teacher,” Mr Parker said.
After returning to Australia, Mr Parker taught at RMIT University in Melbourne and is teaching weekly at The Australian Film and Television Academy TAFTA.
He continues to teach across Australia, New York and Tokyo, and often uses Skype for his classes.
Mr Parker, who taught at the former School of Mines in Ballarat in 1994, will return to the city he lived in to run a workshop.
The on camera acting workshop will cover analysis of film and television acting, how to make maximum impact in front of the camera and working with scripts.
It will include how to perform for different camera shots and how to adjust performances and audition for film and television.
“It is open to anyone, including teenagers. I will adapt my teaching to the age and experience of the actors,” Mr Parker said.
He said there was an art to performing in front of a camera and it was very different to performing in front of a live audience.
The on camera acting workshop will be held in the Masterfoods Theatre at Federation University’s Camp Street campus on July 18 and 19 between 10am to 5pm.
