St John of God Ballarat Hospital patients rated the Drummond Street facility as one of the best for patient care.
The Press Ganey Associates survey inpatient results put the hospital’s rank, among other Australian private hospitals of the same size, within the 97th percentile.
The ranking is a vast improvement on the previous year, with inpatients ranking the hospital in the 77th percentile for 2014.
The facility’s neighbouring regional hospital, St John of God Geelong, was the only hospital of the same size to score higher than Ballarat in the survey.
Survey results also found day surgery patients ranked the hospital within the 89th percentile, up from the 83rd percentile in the previous survey.
The 77-question survey was posted to patients to complete after their treatment at the Ballarat hospital.
About 225 inpatients participated in the survey, as well as 114 day surgery patients.
Press Ganey Associates followed up with patients after their stay to gather the survey results.
SJOG Ballarat chief executive Michael Krieg said he was overwhelmed by the result.
“We are very happy and pleased to have such a great result,” he said.
“We would like to be at the top of the tree, so we will keep working to improve the experience for our patients.”
All wards in the hospital improved their scores from the last survey.
The maternity, general surgery and orthopedic wards were ranked the best in the hospital for patient satisfaction.
The survey was completed by a random selection of patients who had been treated at the hospital between January and March, 2015.
This is the 15th year the survey has been run in the hospital.
Acting director of nursing Michael Ryan said the quality of staff care was noticed during the bedside handovers.
“It’s recognised during the hand over from shift to shift…. patients really engage in that conversation,” he said.
Mr Krieg said the hospital was leading the way in patient care.
“Our results particularly in our inpatient survey show that we are leading the way in the care of our patients in our community,” he said.
