Masked jewel thieves have stolen $700,000 of white gold and diamonds in a terrifying armed robbery in South Yarra, police say.

Two men were sitting in their car in Avoca Street on Tuesday when a pair of armed offenders, wearing black balaclavas, smashed in a car window.
Detectives said the offenders stole two backpacks containing the jewellery before fleeing the scene in a blue Ford sedan.
A police spokeswoman said the offenders were last seen driving north on Murphy Street.
"Police are investigating and are appealing for anyone who saw the men in blue Ford or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to come forward," she said.
