THERE is an air of excitment at Ballarat Secondary College.
Year 10 students at the college’s Wendouree and East campuses are focusing on their next stage of learning – VCE.
What makes it even more exciting is the students will go into year 11 next year at their current campus, rather than making the transition to the college’s Barkly Street campus.
It is proposed two new secondary schools will be set up from the end of 2015, with the Barkly Street campus to close.
Ballarat Secondary College principal Rick Gervasoni said it was the first time in 20 years the Wendouree campus would have year 11 and 12 students at the school.
“The staff are really excited to teach from years seven to 12. They have not had the opportunity for a long time,” Mr Gervasoni said.
“It’s been really well received with students saying they looking forward to planning their VCE.
“We will have more students here (at Wendouree) next year than we have had in a while.”
Ballarat Secondary College Wendouree campus year 10 student Hannah Drew said she wanted to study psychology and legal studies next year in VCE.
“I’m looking forward to starting VCE here. It’s a nice environment,” Hannah said.
“I will be be able to maintain my relationship with my teachers who know my strengths and weaknesses.”
Ballarat Secondary College Wendouree campus year 10 student Martin Mendoza said he was interested in studying physical education and environmental studies.
“I look forward to starting VCE at Wendouree next year,” Martin said.
The college will be holding VCE information evenings on its transition to VCE in July and August.
Ballarat Secondary College pathways and transition leading teacher Nick Stephen said the information sessions were open to current students and parents, and prospective families.
“Students and their parents can come along and get an understanding of our programs,” Mr Stephen said.
“If people are interested, they are more than welcome to come along.”
The Wendouree campus VCE information evening will be held on Monday, July 20, from 6pm to 6.45pm. It will be held in the drama theatre. For more information contact Wendouree campus principal Rick Elliss on 5336 7804.
East campus will hold its VCE information evening on Wednesday, August 12 from 6pm to 7pm. It will be held in the library. For more information contact East campus principal Simon Haber on 5336 7264.
Mr Gervasoni said the college was currently working through a process on changing the college’s name.
