It all came down to the final round, with Rush edging out inter-conference rival Sandringham by two points at the MARS Minerdome on Saturday night. This secured third spot regardless of how other matches panned out across the weekend.
Rush’s season has been inconsistent and injuries, forcing players to play out of position. Now Rush has regained a full contingent for the season’s end, there are still adjustments to get the balance right on the floor.
Rush coach Lucas Bourke said the Sandringham win may not have been his team’s best game but his team did what it had to do.
“At our best, the girls are capable of beating anyone in finals,” Bourke said. “...The outcome (finals) is really positive. All year it’s been difficult to get some stability in the group. Minutes and roles are still changing as we’re bringing players back.”
Ryleigh Haire was Rush’s most valuable player with 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and sharp offensive attack. Olivia Jones (10 points) and Eliza Roughead (nine points, nine rebounds) were solid support.
Miners youth league ended their Big V season with a win against Bendigo and game against Werribee.
