The woman, who is believed to be in her 30s, fell and broke her ankle in the popular limestone Buchan Caves on Sunday afternoon.

Victoria Ambulance spokesman John Mullen said the patient was treated at the scene before being taken to Bairnsdale Regional Health Service Hospital.

"She is serious but in a stable condition with back soreness and ankle injuries," he said.

"It is believed she has a broken ankle."

The woman's ordeal began in the afternoon, just after 1pm on Sunday, when she injured herself at the tourist spot.

Mr Mullen said the woman was rescued at 9.31pm on Sunday.

"Police were co-ordinating the search and rescue with the SES," he said.

Ambulance Victoria had dispatched four units to the caves, receiving the initial call to Gelantipy Road at 1.09pm.

Mr Mullen said the woman's husband, who was "well-versed in first-aid training", had been with her in the cave. He said special equipment was required to extricate the woman as she couldn't walk.

Earlier, Victoria police media officer Kelly Grindley said officers from the search and rescue team were dispatched to the scene.

A Country Fire Authority spokesman had earlier told Fairfax Media that 30 members from Buchan, Lakes Entrance and Morwell were on the scene for the rescue.

"Within the caves, there is a five-metre steep slope that they have to get her up," he said.
