In the lead up to last year’s Victorian election, the Labor Party committed $350,000 to the crossing for Colac-Ballarat Road.
The dangerous stretch of road sees a large number of trucks and cars travelling down the road at all times of the day.
Buninyong MP Geoff Howard said the government was waiting on a final agreement and were working through finer details before construction would start.
“I had a meeting last week with Geelong’s VicRoads branch and we've got another meeting with Golden Plains Shire in a fortnight,” he said.
“There are a few issues that Golden Plains Shire are working through with the issue of the crossing supervisor.”
A footpath exists to the edge of the busy Colac-Ballarat Road, but does not include the standard school crossing additions.
Mr Howard said as soon as the area was designated as a school crossing all it would need would be a supervisor.
“Certainly we want it done by this time next year,” he said.
“I've been pushing on it, particularly over the last month.
“I believe it's important, as do the community of Napoleons. The school is on a busy road.
“It's located at the south end, where traffic from the south approaches at 100km/h and often doesn't slow to the appropriate speed. Most parents feel compelled to drive their kids to school.”
The school’s principal Trevor Edwards said the crossing had been a long running issue for the community.
Electronic signing will be fitted at the site, as well as lines painted on the road to show the area was near a school.
“It really puts the focus on student safety and community safety and ensure that we have a solid foundation of awareness from a school and community point of view,” Mr Edwards said. “It has been a long running issue and we are really pleased that the wheels in motion.”
