In May councils opting to make their main streets smoke free won a powerful ally in the National Heart Foundation.
Chief Kerry Doyle told Fairfax Media there was no safe level of second-hand smoke exposure.
“Evidence shows that a non-smokers contact with second-hand smoke can result in up to a 30 per cent increase in risk of heart disease,” Ms Doyle said.
New South Wales regional cities Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and Wollongong have been at the forefront of radical smoking changes.
From April 13 this year smoking was banned within four metres of entrances to all Victorian children’s indoor play centres, public hospitals, registered community health centres and certain Victorian Government buildings.
