Victoria Police’s Eyewatch social media page allows local police to share updates about crime and community safety.
The page also allows the community to connect with police.
The creation of the Ballarat police Facebook page comes three years after the program was launched in Victoria.
Two years ago, former police and emergency services minister Kim Wells announced an expansion of the Eyewatch initiative to include Bendigo, Mildura and some Melbourne police service areas.
Ballarat Police Inspector Bruce Thomas said he was excited about the inclusion of the page in the Ballarat area.
“We’ve seen the success of the Eyewatch program in other areas and we’re really looking forward to introducing Ballarat locals to the concept,” he said.
“It will be a really great opportunity for us as police to not only interact with members of the public, but for them to interact with us.”
Inspector Thomas hoped by working together, the police and the community could make Ballarat a safer place.
“Taking steps towards using these relevant platforms like Facebook is really positive. It allows us to meet the public where they’re most accessible in this day and age," he said.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing this online community grow.”
Eyewatch is not a platform for reporting crime and is not a replacement for calling triple zero in an emergency.
