Fire crews from Ballarat City and Wendouree brigades were called to the Gregory Street property about 5.30pm.
Emergency services were told the single-storey weatherboard property had been unoccupied for about 12 months.
Ballarat Police are treating the fire as suspicious.
Fire investigators and police returned to the property to investigate on Sunday morning.
Neighbours told police they saw a male and female walking up the driveway of the property prior to the incident.
Moments later, a fire blew out a window of the property.
