He was transported to the Ballarat Base Hospital in a stable condition.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said he had got out of the car himself after the crash, which was witnessed by several other motorists.
“The car has ended up on the median strip. It hit the middle barrier (after) rolling a couple of times,” he said.
“At 5.25pm the patient self-extricated.”
Paramedics were called to the scene at 5.09pm.
The man was the sole occupant of his Toyota sedan.
Traffic on the Western Highway was slowed as emergency services closed one lane of the highway to respond to the crash, but the road was opened up again fully by 6.30pm.
Police and CFA attended the scene but the man was lucky right after the crash as a passing car with both an off-duty police member and paramedic stopped to help.
Senior Constable Ben Hay from the Ballarat Highway Patrol said they were still looking into the causes of the accident.
“He was travelling east-bound on the Western Highway. We haven’t spoke to him yet so we know is he’s lost control of the vehicle,” he said.
“He’s rolled once or twice and ended up on the median strip. He’s come out of the car with relatively minor injuries.”
