RESIDENTS will farewell the Ballarat Football Netball League’s “first lady” on Monday.
Decorated and well-loved netball coach Sally McLean lost her eight year battle with the rare smooth muscle cancer, leimyosarcoma, last week.
Ms McLean coached the Lake Wendouree Football Netball Club to an historic four flags in a row from 2007 to 2010, despite battling cancer since January 2007.
All up, she coached five A-grade premierships in six years from 2007 to 2012 and was named Ballarat Football Netball League coach of the year five times in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Ms McLean was also named the coach of the best team of the BFNL’s first 20 years.
Both the Lakers and Ballarat Football League senior netball best and fairest awards are named in her honour.
She was also a life member of the Lakers after first taking up under-17 coaching duties in 2002 when her daughter Courtney joined the club. A year later, she took up senior coaching roles and became the club’s netball co-ordinator.
She coached the under 18.5 side to consecutive premierships in 2004-2005.
Sally is survived by her family of Ray, Courtney, Jackson, Hazel, Hunter, Jesse and Leah.
