People who know they suffer from seasonal hay fever can be proactive in preventing and controlling their symptoms.
In Australia the seasonal allergy or hay fever season usually runs from September until March or April. Rye grass pollen allergy runs from October to December but couch grass pollen allergy may extend until April.
Monash University Department of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology Professor Robyn O'Hehir said: ``Apart from trying to identify the cause which is usually the grass pollens, and attempting to avoid contact, people should go and see their pharmacist or doctor to seek advice before the hay fever season begins.''
While antihistamines can help offer relief from some of the immediate symptoms of hay fever, they don't tackle the underlying cause.
Nasal corticosteroids have an anti-inflammatory action which can effectively treat and control the underlying cause of hay fever symptoms and offer relief from nasal blockage, itching, sneezing and runny nose.
``Using a once-a-day inhaled nasal corticosteroid spray, such as Rhinocort Hayfever, one to two weeks before the hay fever season begins, can actually help stop symptoms before they start.''
Hay fever can be very debilitating, affecting sleep, work, schooling and overall enjoyment of life.
Untreated hay fever in adults can lead to sinusitis, and in some cases, can result in infections requiring antibiotics for treatment.
