Simon Dale, 15, was awarded an Australian Airforce flying scholarship to gain 30 hours of free flying experience.
The Australian Air Force Cadet said the scholarship would give him enough flying time to gain his recreational pilot’s licence next year.
“It’s cool. I have six hours now. It’s almost like a dream come true. I will make the most of this opportunity,” Simon said.
The scholarship will supplement the Damascus College student’s aviation course he is studying through his Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) program. He was one of three Victorian students to win the scholarship.
Simon said he had been interested in aviation since he was about five-years-old when Ballan pilot Beau Pitcher flew a hornet F/A-18 hornet over his primary school in Ballan.
Simon said he would like to study at the Australian Defence Force Academy.
