The Bombers need victory over Clunes in next weekend's final home and away round to secure a double chance, with the loser of Waubra and Gordon likely to miss out.
On a day as still and grey as the Australian cricket team’s dressing room, it took until the 16th minute of the third term for the Bombers to shake off the Blues when Joel Ottavi's mark and goal uncorked the genie. Anthony Ebery and Mark Phelps then hit the target and when best-on-ground Sam Turner kicked his fourth, the hosts had the match by the throat.
For Buninyong, Ebery controlled the air space, Alex Bomatali did much of the heavy work and Billie Leskosek's precision by foot added some lustre to an - at times - dogged affair. David Snaith and Dylan Galea worked hard all day for Ballan, while Sam Hitchings' attack from half back gave the visitors plenty of drive.
