The Lakers piled on a four-goal third quarter to really make their break on Redan to capture a 42-point victory at Wendouree reserve on Sunday afternoon. Redan had been hunting a third consecutive youth girls’ title. But the Lakers’ dominance was too great across the field.
Redan was kept goalless until late in the fourth quarter.
Lakers captain Jordyn Gilmer said a one-point loss to the Lions earlier this season had given her team a taste of what was possible.
“All year it’s been a struggle to get Redan...we knew we were close,” Gilmer said. “We knew we just had to go out there and give it our all, that all you can do, and we could do this.”
Gilmer graduates from the club’s youth girls program a premiership player and with a best on ground medallion.
Lakers’ Nikkita Alexander, one of the competition’s leading rucks, was powerful in the tap all game and Amy Jackson was stellar with handy run from half-forward.
Lake Wendouree coach Matt Newbury said it felt amazing to finally win a premiership and reward the girls’ hard work.
“These girls listen, learn and strive to continually improve. They grasp the concept of processes,” Newbury said. “We went into this game pretty much like any other. We started our preparations just the same as we would if we were playing the last placed team.”
The Lakers took a 19-point lead into half-time, regrouped and came back playing harder in the second half.
Redan coach Travis Flintoft was proud of his girls’ season and said there was a lot to learn from a loss.
Players’ sportsmanship was impressive at the final siren with Redan and Lake Wendouree players embracing each other for a hard-fought game.
The Lakers finished runner-up to Redan last season. Redan has featured in all five youth girls grand finals.
