“I was so scared of releasing it. I thought everyone was just going to dis me on this pop song,” she said.
“But I just feel like I’m evolving into my mould and doing what I feel comfortable doing and everyday I’m getting more and more confident with myself.
“I call myself a pop singer. That’s what I am and what I’ve striven to be and the more I allow myself to be that, the better it is for me so I’m just going to own it.”
Surprisingly for Asta, Dynamite exploded onto Australian airwaves, entering the top 10 of the ARIA Australian artists singles charts with its burst of 90s-infused R&B coupled with rapper Allday’s biting words.
With its fun, bubblegum pop beats, the single’s accompanying film clip, although simple, was just as well-received.
“Originally I wanted to go crazy with props and things like that because everyone wants the Hollywood film clip but the reality is for me as a performer that simplicity always works so well,” Asta said.
“I thought with the budget we had that we could hire a studio and put all the money towards lighting and making me look like a million dollars instead of crowding myself with materialistic things and storylines.
“I want to be known as a performer so people can watch that and think that’s what we can expect in a show.”
To celebrate the release of Dynamite, Asta has been touring the country as part of her national tour.
The tour is also an OXJAM event, a month-long music festival in August which inspires music lovers to make a difference with proceeds from ticket sales going towards Oxfam Australia.
“Basically I was approached to do it and I don’t know anyone who would not get on board,” Asta said.
“I thought it would be such an awesome thing to do because I’ve always been a fan of Oxfam and what they do.”
Asta is a Tasmanian-born singer-songwriter who rose to fame when she was named the triple j Unearthed High winner in 2012.
As well as beating more than 800 entrants and six finalists to the top spot with her debut single My Heart is on Fire, the song was also voted as number 50 in the triple j Hottest 100 that same year.
After releasing her second and third singles Escape and I Need Answers, Asta took her sweet indie charm on the road, announcing her first Australian tour in September 2013.
She said with every song, every show and every tour, she hoped to better herself as an artist.
“After this tour I’ll probably really get back into the studio and try and better myself. I want to be able to better myself with every song.”
Asta will perform at Karova Lounge on Saturday, August 29. For tickets, visit oztix.com.au
