The Rebels finish the regular season a game clear atop the TAC Cup under-18 competition, a status reinforced when closely-ranked rival Dandenong lost to Geelong on Sunday. The Rebels last achieved this feat in 2012, also under coach David Loader.

“It’s a really good effort for a TAC Cup team with the smallest (region) population,” Loader said. “We’ve faced a lot of challenges. It’s a real credit to the program.”

Oakleigh offered a good hit-out. Three weeks ago the Chargers were ranked fourth on a tight ladder. 

There was little than a goal between the Chargers and Rebels through the opening three terms – the margin was three points at the final break – before the Rebels emphatically slammed on six goals to one in the final term. The Rebels were controlling the game but failing to capitalise on their chances. 

Loader said he was not too concerned. His Rebels were playing better football than the Chargers and persistence paid off in the final term.

Rebels captain Darcy Tucker controlled the game, showed good leadership and continued to build on his strong form late in the season. Matt Johnston, Jacob Hopper and Tom Templeton were again solid and in the Rebels’ best.

The Rebels sported their trademark multi-pronged attack with 11 individual goal-kickers – Hopper, Jacob Brown and Hugh McCluggage each booted two goals. Loader said the spread offered the Rebels options and confidence pushing forward.
