September is Save the Koala Month.
The Australian Koala Foundation says expanding regional areas are putting habitats at risk.
Chief executive Deborah Tabart said they would use the campaign to raise awareness of proposed koala-protecting legislation.
“(O)ur main focus is on new legislation, because it is clear that the current system is broken,” she said.
“We have written a Koala Protection Act, which is based on the Bald Eagle Act from the USA, which saved their iconic species.”
Ballarat’s koalas are concentrated in a corridor stretching through Canadian forest to Creswick and beyond, although the most famous eucalypt-chewers live in the Ballarat Wildlife Park.
Pictured above is Matilda, whose habitat in the wildlife park is a little more secure than her cousins fending for themselves.
