Should the Reds beat top side Bulleen Lions in one of the toughest road trips on the NPLV1 west fixture, it would only require third-placed Moreland Zebras to lose or draw against Melbourne City and second spot is theirs.
However, that is far easier said than done and according to McDonalds Reds coach James Robinson, there is no point even trying to figure out the equations.
“We need to go in the match with the same mindest as other games,” he said.
“We know it’s a massive game but since our destiny is in our own hands now, that’s all we need to worry about.”
With just two rounds remaining in the season, they are currently in the box seat to reach the promotion playoff stage. Although they can possibly lock in a top-two finish on Saturday, they effectively have a double-chance at finishing second.
They meet third-placed Moreland Zebras in the final round, meaning that even if they get overtaken next week, they can finish second with the final game of the season next week against the Zebras.
Charlie King comes back into the side from illness this week, while striker Simon Murphy will be given one more week to fully recover from a groin injury.
Saturday’s match will be played at Bulleen at 5.30pm, with the Moreland match against Melbourne City to start at 4pm.
