An 75-year-old man  is in The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition after a fire at an Oakleigh house on Sunday.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade Fire Services Controller Ross Duncan said crews were called to the single-story brick bungalow, situated at the back of a Leroux Street house, at 11.11am.

"We got a few calls for a dwelling at the rear of a Leroux Street house. There were concerns for the elderly gentleman who was inside," Mr Duncan said.

"When crews arrived, the 75-year-old had breen evacuated and was being attended to by the residents of the house [in front]."

Mr Duncan said three trucks with 11 personnel from the Oakleigh Fire Station attacked the fire and brought it under control.

"It wasn't a big fire," he said.

"Once the fire was knocked down, [the MFB] conducted a search inside and no one else was inside."

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man suffered burns to his back and to his face.

"He was transported to The Alfred hospital in serious but stable condition," Mr Mullen said.

He said, three MICA units, two paramedic crews and a health commander were at the incident.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belle Nolan said police attended the scene but were not treating the incident as suspicious.

The Alfred hospital spokesman Corey Nassau said the man remained in a stable but serious condition.
