In a coup for the zoo that has mainly native animals, the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard, will join the park’s crowd-pulling crocodile Crunch and the friendly kangaroos that wander the grounds.
In the wild the lizards are limited to several Indonesian islands, and are somewhat more relaxed than the carnivorous monsters depicted in the most recent James Bond film, Skyfall.
Ballarat Wildlife Park will put on a grand opening for Lava Claw on Wednesday morning.
The Indonesian consul-general for Melbourne Dewi Wahab will be at the ceremony to officially open a brand new exhibit.
Komodo dragons grow up to three metres long and weigh up to 70kg.
The non-captive animals have such septic saliva than it can quickly bring on blood poisoning in their prey, however, in captivity this is negated by better hygiene and antibiotics.
Komodo dragons are an endangered species.
