Barton,19, won the overall round of the Moto3 class at the final round of the 2015 Australian Superbike Championship Phillip Island at the weekend, in what was a final preparation for the race of his life.
The promising teenager won two out of three races in the Moto3/125cc Grand Prix Championship, enough to finish first overall in the final round.
He finished third overall for the championship.
The positive result serves as the ideal lead-up to the Australian MotoGP.
Barton won the first race of the weekend by the biggest margin he’s achieved all year – a 5.639 second difference between second-place getter Brian Houghton from Queensland. It was that achievement, especially occurring at Phillip Island, that gives him great confidence leading up to the major race from October 16-18.
“We had the MotoGP in the back of our minds, but basically all I had to do on the weekend was finish the races and gain as much data and confidence on the track as I could,” he said.
“I definitely tried to carry a bit more speed in the turns which meant using the curbs more. As a result our times came down and we achieved a new personal best (1:44.100).”
Barton plans to compete in the FIM world junior Moto3 championship (CEV) in Europe next year.
For now, however, he is centering all of his focus on the MotoGP.
“The plan is to live in the UK and ride throughout Spain and in other European countries,” Barton said.
“At the moment it is looking pretty promising, but we have to get over the MotoGP hump.”
