Tennis ACT chief executive Ross Triffitt will bring Albury curator Shayne Ried​ to Canberra this weekend to help with their bid for Australia's Davis Cup tie against the USA in March.

While he was focussed on a bid to use their brand new plexipave show court, Triffitt said they'd also examine the possibility of putting a drop-in court on top of that hardcourt.

But a grasscourt bid would also require about four practice courts.

Triffitt said they would tap into Ried's expertise to look at potentially turning a lawn bowls green, as well as other existing grass surfaces, into practice facilities.

Ried was brought in by Tennis Australia to build the grass courts used for Australia's last home Davis Cup tie in Darwin in July.

"He's one of the leading consultants in grasscourt tennis and somebody Tennis Australia would be using for any of the grasscourt constructions," Triffitt said on Tuesday.

"There's a lot of considerations around coming up with a proposition for practice courts.

"Obviously we can drop in the modular court into the show-court area at Lyneham, then the consideration becomes providing practice courts.

"There's a few things that we're considering - the possible conversion of bowling greens or other turf-based sporting pitches or the actual construction of courts themselves at Lyneham.

"Until we have the expert here and consult with him as to what are feasible options, we won't really have a clear way forward."

The Canberra Tennis Centre has undergone a $10.5 million facelift, which included a plexipave show court that can house 4000 fans, with the express purpose of bringing elite tennis back to the nation's capital.

While there were no grasscourts at the centre in Lyneham, Triffitt said they'd also consider installing some.

He said that option would also provide Canberra's emerging star Nick Kyrgios with somewhere to train on grass.

"If we were to build a more permanent solution it would give us an advantage for future bids as well," Triffitt said.

"It would be fantastic for Nick, for some of his preparations, and that's why we'd consider the potential of putting in a more permanent solution."

But Triffitt said the focus would be on a hardcourt bid for the Davis Cup.

He said the surface used would depend on the preference of Australia's Davis Cup captain.

This year that was Canberra product Wally Masur, but at the time of Masur's appointment it was widely tipped former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt would take over when he retired after next year's Australian Open.

"We do have a good surface for Davis Cup in the plexipave show court, it's just that the current team are well suited to grass and it's likely a grasscourt would be favoured in any bid," Triffitt said.

"There's the consideration of whether we would go to any additional expense to improve our chances, but there would need to be some serious consideration into what value that would add over time."

Not only was Tennis ACT looking to bring the Davis Cup to Canberra for the first time, but they'll also host a men's and women's professional tournament next month.

In the meantime, Australia's best junior talent is in the ACT for the Canberra Junior International, with the main draw for both boys and girls getting under way at Lyneham on Wednesday.
