Almost 100 final year Faculty of Education students attended the forum at the university’s Mount Helen campus on Thursday. It included information sessions, a careers panel and expo.
Federation University professional experience program co-ordinator Sharon Davis said the forum provided students with information to make them ready for employment in 2016.
She said the forum answered questions for graduate teachers including, how to apply for a job, what to do when paid and how to register as a teacher.
Students received information from a range of organisations, including the Victorian Institute of Teachers, Australian Education Union and Eureka Community Kindergarten Association.
Final year students Steph Harper and Jody Dontje received information from Academics International about teaching overseas.
The pair plan to teach at a P-10 school in London next year. Ms Dontje will use her experience in London as a stepping stone to teach in Nepal.
The students enjoyed the careers panel part of the day and networking.
“It’s a great way to network with different organisations. It’s good to get that face-to-face rather than googling,” Ms Harper said.
Buninyong Primary School assistant principal Josh Ebbels was on the careers panel. He said students mostly asked questions on gaining employment, including resumes.
He said employment would be easy for students if they were passionate about teaching. Mr Ebbels encouraged students to get their hands dirty early on in their employment.
“Get into the school and embed yourself. Manage a work-life balance. It’s not a nine to 3.30 job. It’s a job to be passionate about and the more you put in the more you get out of it,” Mr Ebbels said.
Federation University Australia careers and employment manager Deborah Cutts said the inaugural forum was a success and it would be held in 2016.
