Arts and culture coordinator at Backspace Gallery, Deborah Klein said artists were invited to craft a portrait of those who define their Central Highlands community.
“This is a regional answer to the Archibald Prize. It is faces and stories from the Central Highlands,” she said.
“We have a people's choice award running and the artist that receives the most votes will win $100 framing voucher for their next masterpiece.”
Exploring their own relationships to towns, neighbourhoods, affinity groups, place and friendships, the 26 exhibiting artists have called into being a uniquely homegrown community that spans a shared history.
Body of Work opened with a community gala on Saturday and will continue through to Sunday, November 1.
Ms Klein said she hoped crowds visiting the Archibald Portrait Prize at the Art Gallery of Ballarat will also take time to view Body of Work.
