Harvey Norman Rush has re-signed the homegrown youngster, who is in her second season with Canberra Capitals in the Women’s National Basketball League.
“Home is home,” said Wehrung, who is from Korweinguboora and was co-captain of Rush last season.
“Family is important and to get to come back and give back to the club I’ve been with for years since juniors is also important,” she said.
Wehrung had a big campaign with Rush this year, winning the team’s most valuable player award and also being named the SEABL youth player of the year.
The 19-year-old averaged 35.57 minutes a game, 17.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.
This was a significant increase on her previous season when she averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 rebounds.
New Rush head coach David Flint said now that Wehrung had been secured, the team would now be able to begin putting the pieces together for next year’s roster.
"I have had the opportunity over the years to watch Abbey's development through the Country Victorian state program, the Ballarat Rush and Canberra Capitals.
“Now I get the ability first hand to coach her on the floor and assist her in elevating her game to the next level.
Abbey has a tremendous work ethic and is a terrific person who has been fantastic role model for junior players coming through our program.
“She will be an instrumental part of our program moving forward and making a concerted effort of making the finals,” Flint said.
Wehrung will line up for Canberra against Sydney Flames in its second game of the WNBL season on Wednesday night.
She had 26 minutes on court in the Capital’s first round loss to Dandenong Rangers on Saturday night, scoring eight points, and having four rebounds and two assists.
Wehrung will rejoin the Rush sometime between mid-February and late March, depending on when Canberra’s season ends.
