Alan Godfrey served in the second world war, including as medic at a POW camp in Borneo, and said he was impressed by Ballarat’s shrine.
“I served in Darwin in 1941 during the bombing and went on to New Guinea, Philippines and Borneo,” he said.
“This is a very nice memorial.”
Mr Godfrey was joined by president of Burnside Retirement Village Ladies Legacy Group, Norma Johnson and war widow Marjorie Healey for a wreath laying ceremony and ode to the fallen.
“Ballarat should be very proud, this is a wonderful memorial,” Ms Johnson said.
