It is also important for everyone to understand the pressure placed on these young, impressionable people, whether from themselves, their family, their peers or their schools.
But what’s more important for these year 12 students to remember is trying their best is all that should be asked of them.
What should also be emphasised is that their entire lives should not hang on their exam results, a sentiment echoed by western Victorian MP Andrew Broad on Wednesday.
The federal Nationals MP said he had no idea what he wanted to do after high school and now had a message for students undertaking their final exams: "Do your best and enjoy your life".
The western Victorian MP urged students on Wednesday not be overwhelmed by the pressure of final exams, admitting he was unsure of his own prospects at the end of school.
"I certainly didn't think I'd finish up having a say in how the country was run," said Mr Broad, a former farmer.
He wants to reassure students their entire life does not hinge on their exam results. "As long as you've got a sense of self-esteem and sense of self-worth, you can do anything with your life," he said.
With many year 12 students turning 18 during the last year of their secondary studies, these young people are already under enough pressure to fit in driving lessons, go for their P-plates, hold down part-time jobs, keep up with their sporting interests and find enough time for themselves and their friends.
Add to this the pressures of reaching their ATAR score suitable for what they want to study at university, and many students will find the pressure overwhelming.
They need to understand their ATAR score is not the be-all and end-all of their university/career aspirations. There are many different avenues of gaining a uni/job placement of their choice.
They also need to understand there are people out there who support and love them whatever their ATAR score.
