Government must curb hawkers' tactics

I AM tired of strangers coming to my door determined to sell me a new energy or phone package.

What makes it worse is that they deliberately target the elderly, disabled and people from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Earlier this year a private members bill was introduced into federal parliament which, if passed, will allow households to opt out of receiving unsolicited door to door sales calls.

The bill establishes a Do Not Knock Register to prohibit salespeople from calling on residential and government addresses listed on the register.

It has received backing from thousands of Australians who are fed up with fending off aggressive salespeople in what should be the sanctity of our own homes.

Let's hope the government listens to its constituents and adopts this bill so that vulnerable people are better protected in the future.
