“I am so excited to be coming back. Ballarat feels like home,” Booker said on recommitting to the GMHBA Miners.
Head coach Eric Hayes believes Booker can go to another level – improving as a player and a leader.
Booker had an outstanding 2015 season.
Bouncing back from a mid-season Achilles tendon injury which cut short his first year with the Miners, the United States import won Ballarat’s most valuable player award and was selected in the SEABL all-star five.
Booker, who is the first re-signing for the Miners, scored 602 points at an average of 25.1 and averages of 5.2 assists.
Hayes said he would again be looking to Booker being a big scoring threat.
Hayes said it would again be a challenge putting together a squad with the right balance of skills and personalities ensure he put the best team on the floor.
He believes the experience he gained in doing that for the first time ahead of last season would assist him through the process.
Basketball Ballarat elite teams administrator Melissa Thomas said Booker would not only be a great asset on the court.
She said he would again be making regular appearances at school and club clinics, encouraging the younger generation to get active through the game.
These will include “Aussie Hoops” clinics, specialist coaching at Ballarat High School, mentoring boys at Delacombe Primary School, “Active After-School” and school holiday camps and skills days.
“Roy has been a great contributor to the community both on and off the court. He can’t go anywhere in the Minerdome without being stopped. Everyone knows him and he always has time and get to know them,” Thomas said.
Exactly when Booker returns to Ballarat is yet to be determined.
