Ballarat Grammar year 10 student Olivia Delahunty designed and made the dress from Laminex sample tiles attached to a metal and chicken wire frame.
The unique dress placed second in the wearable art category of the recent Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards national final.
Olivia’s inspiration to create a dress from re-cycled products was sparked by an image of a dress constructed from empty plastic drink bottles she discovered on an internet search.
Ballarat Grammar textile teacher Jane Boadle applauded Olivia’s efforts. “Olivia continues a strong tradition of success of Ballarat Grammar students in design and fashion. Her unique, non-symmetrical design displays a mature insight into colour and form and a dedication to the construction process,” Ms Boadle said.
To qualify for the national final, Olivia took out first place at the Victorian awards in August. Two finalists from each state competed for the title.
