SmoothFM clung to top spot for two ratings periods but has once again ceded the crown to KIIS1065, home to Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson.

2DayFM's woes show no sign of turning the corner with the station slumping half a ratings point to 3.4 overall.

Of particular concern to station bosses will be the latest listener verdict on high-profile signings Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, whose Drive show shed 1.2 points to 5.6 after an initially promising start.

And while popping champagne corks are unlikely over at 702 ABC Sydney, staff at the public broadcaster would be justified in adding an extra spoonful of sugar to their morning tea today, with an overall rating of 11, up 1.6 points.

Standout performers for Auntie were James Valentine with his quirky afternoon show, up 2 points, and the evergreen Richard Glover who climbed 1.5 points to a 2015 high of 12.2.

The ABC is unlikely to trouble 2GB in the ratings any time soon, but the Alan Jones powered juggernaut has faltered a little, down to 13.3 with Jones personally shedding 1.3 points.

Guy Dobson from SCA, owners of 2DayFM, admitted breakfast was still proving challenging for the station, which most recently replaced Dan Debuf and Maz Compton in that spot with Rove McManus and radio newcomer and Bachelorette Sam Frost.

Unsurprisingly, 2DayFM only managed an anemic 2.9 in the breakfast slot, but Dobson said he was expecting great things from McManus and Frost.

"We're going to work this bloody show hard," he said. "I think after two days the guys show a great chemistry. It's a much more mature show and fits the TodayFM brand better. There are some rough edges there but nothing major or dramatic."

Dobson was also confident in Blake and Lee, saying the hit taken by their drive show in Sydney was partly a knock-on from the breakfast problems at the station.

"The breakfast show we had before wasn't compatible with the Hamish and Andy audience," he said. "We had a very Generation Y breakfast show. What we have now with Rove and Sam is much more befitting Hamish and Andy and drive."

Paul Jackson from Nova admitted that "on a personal level" he was "pretty pissed off" that the station had handed back top spot to bitter rivals KIIS but on a more objective reading there was nothing alarming in the figures.

"I don't think we'll have an inquest or anything like that," he said. "I think the station sounds fantastic."

However, he added that they would be going all out to end the year on a high.

Duncan Campbell from ARN, owner of KIIS, said the station had picked up its game bty returning to its roots.

"We refocused KIIS and that has worked well for us," he said. "We went back to the original DNA of the radio station which was based around celebrity and also talking very much to mainstream suburban Sydney."
