A serious crash on Sunday, November 8 saw one man airlifted to a Melbourne hospital with possible spinal and chest injuries, with three women – all in a stable condition – also taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital.
The crash occurred on the intersection of Victoria and Suburban streets at about 1pm.
Clunes CFA member Ian Baker said he has witnessed the aftermath of multiple crashes at the intersection.
“I’ve only been in the brigade over here for 10 years and I think there’s been 20 accidents in my time,” Mr Baker said.
“Something needs to be done. The basic trouble is that they’re give way signs (as opposed to stop signs).
“We’d like to see traffic islands down in Suburban Street.”
Clunes resident Arno Van Berkel, who lives near the intersection, described it as a “shocker”.
"It’s just a bad cross road, it’s a shocker – there’s no white lines (to indicate when to stop) or anything,” Mr Van Berkel said.
Hepburn Shire Council has resolved to conduct works on the intersection from January, 2016.
Council’s application for funding from the federal government’s black spot program has been approved, with $165,000 to be put towards the project.
Hepburn Shire general manager of infrastructure Bruce Lucas said dividers will be installed on both sides of Suburban Street to help reduce risks when approaching the intersection, while road seals will also be widened and white lines clearly marked.
Mr Lucas said it is unknown what signage will be implemented, but said it is more likely that it will remain a give way intersection.
“We’ve looked at that (bringing in stop signs) in the past and it doesn’t have the warrant for that,” he said. “If you pull up at the give way line (on Suburban Street), there’s adequate sight distance down Victoria Street.”
Council put up more give way signs to replace the damaged ones.
