UFS chief pharmacist Bobby Mehta said a simple, quick breathing test could make a big difference. All UFS Dispensaries will offer free screening on Wednesday for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with an extra screening station set up in Central Square to offer advice and identify those at-risk.
Early intervention is the best method to manage deteriorating, long-term lung condition, which can include emphysema, chronic asthma and chronic bronchitis. Symptoms include breathlessness, persistent coughing and increased phlegm.
“Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, it can be one of those silent conditions to start,” Mr Mehta said. “Some people are putting up with annoying, persistent coughs...there is no harm in getting screened.”
The screenings – measuring lung volume by breathing into a small device – mark World COPD day. Smoking, environment and genetics are key risk factors, especially for people aged over 40. Central Square screening available, 10am to 3pm.
