A man took a homemade gun to a Centrelink office in Melbourne's north, leaving staff to make a startling discovery.

A 41-year-old man left the gun behind in a bag at the Coburg welfare office some time before 10.30am last Tuesday.
Police were told the man left the bag on the counter after speaking to staff about a welfare payment.
He returned to retrieve it, but fled before police arrived, leaving the bag behind.
